Amethyst - why we love it so much.
Amethyst is one of the most common and well known crystals, it is often one of the first we discover on our crystal journey- aside from Quartz. But what is Amethyst, how is it made, what forms does it come in, and what is it good for? Well, read on to find out!
Understanding Amethyst
Where does Amethyst come from?
Amethyst is a variety of Quartz found all over the world, Brazil being the most abundant. Amethyst can be transparent, terminated crystals of all sizes in geodes, clusters, and long single terminations.
What does Amethyst look like?
The inclusion of manganese in clear Quartz produces Amethyst, whilst additional amounts of iron vary the purple colouration. Amethyst colour ranges from pale pink, red-violet to deep violet, but the paler variety is just as powerful. Recently an Amethyst deposit was discovered in Madagascar, which has layers of Quartz and Amethyst. Robert Simmons called this Amazez.
The legend of Amethyst
It is said Bacchus, God of Wine, angry over an insult, decreed whoever he would see next would be fed to the tigers. Unfortunately beautiful maiden Amethyst, on her way to worship the shrine of Diana, was the victim. The Tiger sprang attacked Amethyst, and she sought the protection of the goddess Diana who saved her by turning Amethyst into a clear, white crystal. Bacchus, regretting his anger, poured the juice of his grapes over the stone as an offering, so the legend states, giving the gem its lovely purple hue.
